Pacific Rim: Uprising Header

Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim gets high marks for its giant robot vs Kaiju fun. Though the film was more style than substance, and almost all of it took place in the dark, making it that much harder to see the fights. However, Pacific Rim: Uprising looks like it will take a new direction. The connective tissues of its predecessor are still there. Familiar characters are making a return, and John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father (played by Idris Elba) gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous Kaiju.

Of course, there are the giant robots and Kaiju. However, the sequel seems to be introducing new elements into the franchise. And one that may present a threat to the Jaeger pilots when another Jaeger appears to them as the opposition. Check out the latest trailer below.

The film seems to be throwing everything but the kitchen sink. There is so much disregard for the massive destruction caused by the fights between the Jaegers and Kaiju. And we can all see it happening before our eyes. It all feels like a fun B-rated movie that doesn’t care about the reviews and criticisms. It looks like a film that just wants to have fun, and the only way to do that is if there is a lot of mayhem and destruction.

I mean these Jaeger pilots are using cars and pieces of buildings as projectiles to be used against the Kaiju. They’re also being thrown through buildings. It’s the kind of reckless fun this kind of film should have.

Also starring in the film is Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Adria Arjona, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)””who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Pacific Rim Uprising opens in theaters on March 22, 2018.
