‘Paddington’s Paul King To Direct Disney’s Live-Action ‘Pinocchio’

The Paddington films are so tenderly sweet, innocent, and loving. It’s hard to resist their charms. When films are as universally loved as they are, you can be sure that studios want someone like director Paul King on board for one of their projects.

Disney, who has been re-envisioning their animated films and turning them into live-action ones, will now bring in King to direct their live-action telling of Pinocchio. More on the story below.

Per THR, Disney has picked King to direct Pinocchio, which is tentatively scheduled to start shooting later this fall. He’ll be using a script written by Jack Thorne, who wrote the wonderful family friendly hit Wonder. Peter Hedges and Chris Weitz wrote the previous draft. Weitz and his Depth of Field partner Andrew Miano will produce.

The project was supposed to be directed by Sam Mendes (Skyfall), however, the director exited the project for unknown reasons.

King has become one of the premiere directors having helmed the two Paddington films. Based on the stories of the character of the same name, Paddington is a polite and kindhearted anthropomorphized bear who always can be seen wearing a blue coat and a red hat. He has a knack for innocently getting into trouble while also releasing his inner beast whenever he sees something he disapproves of.

Both films have earned well over $200 million dollars at the box office, and both were highly praised by critics.

The animated Pinocchio was released in 1940. The second animated film to be released by Walt Disney Studios, it followed Geppetto, a puppeteer, who created a wooden puppet named Pinocchio that he wished could be a real boy. It was that same night that a fairy granted him his wish, but with a caveat. Pinocchio wasn’t flesh and blood, and in order for him to become a real boy, he would have to go through a series of trials that would test his honesty. So with the help of Jiminy Cricket, the two go off on an adventure, where they learn about the value of truth and honesty.

It was just last week that King also signed on to direct a new iteration of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The plot of that film and the scheduled production are being kept under wraps. But with Pinocchio scheduled to start shooting this fall, we can probably expect to see Willy Wonka start shooting soon after. Especially since Simon Rich is ironing out the script.
