J.J. Abrams To Shoot ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ This Summer
  |  @   |

It’s beginning to look like the end of the Skywalker saga as Disney and Lucasfilm begin to launch new Star Wars trilogies, led by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, and franchise films from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Not to mention the spinoffs that step away from the galaxy’s most dysfunctional family. But before it can come to an end – if it truly is the end – we have to get to the untitled Star Wars: Episode IX.

J.J. Abrams returns to direct the film, taking the place of Colin Trevorrow. Abrams recently spoke a little bit about the status of the film, and said the plan was to begin shooting this summer. More on the story below.

Abrams took to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to comment on where the film is at. Here is what he had to say:

“We have a script, which is a big deal for me. It starts shooting end of July “¦ Sometimes having the script in advance is something I haven’t always been lucky enough to have “¦ But I’m writing this with Chris Terrio, who’s a genius, and I’m having a great time.”

Before Abrams came on board, Trevorrow and his writing partner, Derek Connolly, penned a script. It was a script that clearly wasn’t working for those at Lucasfilm. So the Wonder‘s Jack Throne was brought in to punch it up. However, when Trevorrow was let go and replaced by Abrams, many were wondering if the Force Awakens director would use it or rewrite it.

Instead of doing that, Abrams chose to start with a clean slate and brought in Terrio to craft Episode IX.

It will be interesting to see where the franchise goes or ends from here. Narratively, the Resistance is in tatters, broken thanks to The First Order’s onslaught. Under its newfound leadership, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), will fulfill his destiny and destroy want remains of the Resistance. However, how the Resistance as well as Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) to defeat them. Hopefully Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) will make a comeback as well will retaliate remains to be seen.

Behind-the-scenes there is also some trouble as well. Aside from the early production problems the film had with Trevorrow, Episode IX does not have Carrie Fisher, who had passed away a year before Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released. There were reports that Episode IX would have a strong emphasis on her character, but that was when she was still alive and when Trevorrow was at the helm. Obviously, all that has changed.

But if anyone can figure out how to bring it all together it’s Abrams. We’ll just have to wait and see if he and Terrio give everyone in the Skywalker saga a nice send off.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019
