Gemma Chan To Play Kree Spy Minn-Erva In ‘Captain Marvel’

Marvel Studios is in the midst of shooting Captain Marvel. Starring Brie Larson as the title hero, the film will cover Carol Danvers’ story from Air Force officer to galactic superhero.

Set in the ’90s, Captain Marvel also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, and DeWanda Wise, and will introduce the Skrulls as a major villain. Now the film is making one new addition to the cast. Humans star Gemma Chan has just signed on to play Minn-Erva, a Kree spy who shares similar powers to Captain Marvel. More on the story below.

Deadline says that plot details are limited at this point. However, early concept art shows us that Captain Marvel will battle against the shapeshifting Kree. Mendelsohn is said to play a villain, who has yet to be named, while Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury. Law will play Mar-Vell.

For those that may not be familiar with who Captain Marvel is, Carol Danvers is an officer in the United States Air Force and Security Chief of a restricted military base. She worked with a Dr. Walter Lawson, aka Captain Mar-Vell, who was really a Kree spy. When a device of Kree origin explodes, Mar-Vell protects her, and in doing so, infuses her DNA with Kree powers.

Gemma Chan is probably best known for her work on AMC’s Humans, which will debut its third season later this year. In addition to that, she voiced a character in Transformers: The Last Knight, and will appear later this year in Crazy Rich Asians.

As for her character, Minn-Erva is another Kree spy who actively sought out Mar-Vell in hopes that he could help her unlock the potential of their race. Her intentions were to breed with him, and create a stronger race of Kree. Obviously, this could spell trouble for Danvers, who shares more than just a connection with Mar-Vell.

Minn-Erva has super-strength and durability and is also able to home in on individuals and energy signatures on a planet-wide radius. She is also a gifted bio-geneticist.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck direct using a script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet with previous drafts penned by Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman. Captain Marvel opens in theaters on March 8, 2019.
