Sony has been working on putting together a Men in Black reboot for quite some time. At first, the studio had this crazy idea of using the franchise in a crossover with the Jump Street films, with a director even being hired at one point. But that hasn’t panned out yet (the idea is still being considered for the future).
So now the franchises are back to being their own separate thing. They are already talking to F. Gary Gray (The Fate of the Furious) to direct the film, and now it looks like they are talking to Chris Hemsworth to appear in the film. More on the story below.
THR says Hemsworth is in early negotiations to appear as one of the two leads in the Men in Black reboot. According to their report, the film will be a global adventure that sees a white male, a female of color, and an older man solving alien cases based on the universe established by the previous films. The studio is pretty much taking the Jurassic World approach to the reboot, by expanding the current universe by building upon the existing one. However, Agents J and K (played in the original trilogy by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones) will not appear in the reboot, or at least not have a significant role in it. You can probably guess they will have some sort of cameo.
Hemsworth is a perfect choice as one of the two characters. One, he obviously fits the white male criteria, the other is the fact that he is quite funny. His comedic timing is almost too perfect, and he showed us just how funny he could be in films like the Vacation reboot and the Ghostbusters reboot. Not to mention he got to express his comedic chops in Thor: Ragnarok, which is arguably the best Marvel Cinematic Universe comedy.
No word yet on who the studio is looking at to fill the woman of color role, though some hope Tiffany Haddish or Letitia Wright will land the role. Haddish and Wright were both scene stealers in Girls Trip and Black Panther, respectively.
Released back in 1999, the first Men in Black starred Smith as a young New York cop turned government agent protecting humans from the likes of dangerous aliens and assisting peace-loving aliens to hide in plain sight. As Agent J, he was trained by Jones’ cantankerous Agent K, and together, they helped protect the world from the scum of the universe.
The script will be penned by Iron Man scribes Matt Holloway and Art Marcum.
The film is slated for release on June 14, 2019.
