Brad Pitt in War Machine

Quentin Tarantino‘s penultimate film will be set in 1960s Hollywood at a time when the hippy movement was at its peak and the infamous Charles Manson and his crazy cult members killed Sharon Tate. The film has already cast Leonardo DiCaprio as a TV actor who is looking for a way to break into the movie business. But Tarantino didn’t just want DiCaprio. Among the actors he wanted for his newest film are Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, and Tom Cruise.

Well, you can scratch one of those names off the list as Pitt will be joining the film as one of the friends of DiCaprio’s character. The director has also officially titled his ninth film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. More on the story below.

Deadline says Pitt will play Cliff Booth, a stunt double to Rick Dalton (DiCaprio). While the two are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they no longer recognize, Rick says he may have a way to make it into the business thanks in part to his next-door neighbor Sharon Tate.

Tarantino has been eyeing Robbie to fill the role of Tate since the project was announced last year. There’s no word yet on whether or not he is making any progress on that, but the director has also been talking to Cruise who would play a key role in the film.

Tarantino said this in an official announcement from distributor Sony Pictures:

“I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was seven years old. I’m very excited to tell this story of an L.A. and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore.”

This wouldn’t be the first time that Tarantino has worked with both Pitt and DiCaprio. He worked with Pitt for the first time on Inglourious Basterds back in 2009, where it grossed $321 million worldwide and earned eight Academy Award nominations, taking home one for Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz). The director has also worked with DiCaprio in Django Unchained in 2012. The film earned over $425 million worldwide, earning five Academy Award nominations and taking home two for Best Supporting Actor (Waltz again) and Best Original Screenplay (Tarantino).

Deadline mentions that the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood title may be a nod to Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In America and Once Upon A Time In The West.

The film will be distributed by Sony, who outbid other studios like Warner Bros. when Tarantino was shopping the project after The Weinstein Company collapsed after it was revealed that Harvey Weinstein was involved in numerous sexual assault allegations.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood will hit theaters on August 9, 2019.
