‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Trailer: A Spoonful Of Sugar For A New Generation
  |  @   |

It has been 54 years since Mary Poppins gave the world her valuable lessons and wondrous magic. Now Disney, the studio that first brought us the film adaptation, is ready to give us an update of the eponymous English nanny with a new semi-sequel titled Mary Poppins Returns. This time Emily Blunt plays the titular character that was first portrayed by Julie Andrews.

Now they are giving us the first look at the film with a brand new teaser, that quite literally lives up to the name teaser. Check it out here below.

The tagline establishes that audiences will be returning to an untouched 1930s London that has been ravaged by the economic downfall of the depression. It opens up to a quiet, cold, and empty street, where gates slowly swing as if it was a ghost town. But there is still hope in the air, as people still have that inner child that is just waiting to come out. Which seems fitting considering the times we live in now.

That magic and wonder will indeed return, as Mary Hoppins is here to restore some of that lost hope to the same family who had suffered a considerable loss.

Blunt reunites with her Into The Woods director Rob Marshall for the second time and she will join Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda, plus an all-star cast that includes Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, and Julie Walters, with Colin Firth and Meryl Streep – who also reunites with Marshall. Mary Poppins alum Dick Van Dyke also returns, this time playing a new character.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

“Mary Poppins Returns” is set in 1930s depression-era London (the time period of the original novels) and is drawn from the wealth of material in PL Travers’ additional seven books. In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Streep).

PL Travers first introduced the world to the no-nonsense nanny in her 1934 book “Mary Poppins,” which Disney adapted for the screen and released in August, 1964. The film, which was directed by Robert Stevenson and starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, was the top-grossing film of that year and nominated for 13 Academy Awards®, winning five. However, the subsequent adventures of Mary Poppins remained only on the pages of PL Travers’ seven additional books, which she published between 1935 and 1988.

Written by David Magee based on “The Mary Poppins Stories” by PL Travers, Mary Poppins Returns opens in theaters on December 25, 2018.
