There are new details emerging about the content that will be seen on Disney’s yet-to-be-named streaming service. The service will launch in 2019 and provide customers with content from a wide-range of Disney properties from Disney itself to Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm.
Earlier this year, Disney CEO Bob Iger talked about the number of Star Wars original shows that would be created specifically for the direct-to-consumer platform. While he wasn’t able to talk in great detail about what we would see in these new shows, he did say that the level of talent would be significant. And now we are learning just how significant it will be.
Lucasfilm has just announced that Jon Favreau will be an executive producer on one of the Star Wars series that can be streamed exclusively on Disney’s streaming service. More on the story below.
It is only an executive producer title, but having someone like Favreau attached does give the unnamed series some merit. Favreau has an excellent filmmaking background having directed films like Elf, Zathura: A Space Adventure, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Chef, The Jungle Book, and the upcoming adaptation of The Lion King.
But this wouldn’t be the first time that Favreau has been involved in the Star Wars galaxy. He has had roles in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Of the announcement Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said:
“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform. Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”
With Favreau adding:
“If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”
No details about the plot of the show or how it ties into the Star Wars universe as a whole were given. However, Disney and Lucasfilm have big plans for the franchise outside of the Skywalker saga. They have already announced a new trilogy from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and new films from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
The untitled Star Wars live-action series does not yet have a release date.
