Watch: ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Deleted Scene With Finn and Captain Phasma
  |  @   |

The joys of watching a deleted scene are imagining how it could have fit into the film in the first place. Some of the scenes are cut out because of the film’s runtime. Other times they are necessary because of pacing. So there will be plenty of time to figure out why certain scenes in Star Wars: The Last Jedi ended up on the cutting room floor.

While deleted scenes almost seem like a necessary addition to any DVD, there is one deleted scene from The Last Jedi involving Finn (John Boyega) and Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) that will have fans questioning why it was cut out and chosen over the scene that made the final theatrical cut. Check it out below, but beware of spoilers ahead.

The scene in question centers on the climactic battle between Finn and Phasma, both of whom are aboard Supreme Leader Snoke’s downed ship. As we all saw in the theatrical cut, Phasma believed that she had killed Finn, but in a twist of fate, Finn turned it all around and sent the Chrome Dome to her fiery doom.

The deleted scene was revealed on The Star Wars Show on the official Star Wars YouTube page. In that scene, we see Finn and Phasma in the heat of battle. However, the former stormtrooper gets the upper hand by revealing that she was the one to lower Starkiller Base’s energy shields. Surrounding stormtroopers begin to hesitate as they start to question whether or not this was true. However, Phasma is quick to take them out with her blaster. While she is able to put Finn on the ground, she mocks him with “You were always scum.” Unfortunately, Finn grabs cannon, and retorts with “rebel scum,” then proceeds to shoot her.

Now, it’s not clear why director Rian Johnson chose to leave this scene out and put the theatrical one in. Perhaps dramatic effect or pacing. But, for me, this scene had a lot more impact than the theatrical one. Of course, it’s just the deleted scene on its own, and it didn’t have any of the context leading up to it. On its own it’s a lot of fun and it would have been interesting to see it put into the film.

Still, it is a little bit disappointing that a character like Phasma has been reduced to something so menial. Yes, she had a larger role in The Last Jedi, but her appearance was just as quick and swift as her burning fate. That being said, we all thought she was put in the trash compactor in The Force Awakens, so there could be a chance that she, somehow, survives her fate. I guess it will be up to Episode IX director J.J. Abrams to figure that one out.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be available digitally on March 13, and on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray disc March 27.

  1. Rian Johnson is the biggest hack to ever get his hands on Star Wars. I just don’t know if they can fix the mess that The Last Jedi left behind.
