‘Captain Marvel’ Will Draw Inspiration From ’90s Films Like ‘Terminator 2’
  |  @   |

Marvel Studios is making a shift in representation. The superhero studio took their first steps by releasing Black Panther, their first superhero film with a person of color as the lead. So far, the film has grossed over $1 billion worldwide in less than a month, and it’s obvious that the studio will follow that pattern and change in accordance to the social changes. And just as Black Panther was their first for people of color, Captain Marvel will be their first female-led superhero film. Set to be released in March 2019, the film sees Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) go from human to superhuman fighting the alien Skrulls. It will also be the first Marvel film to be set in the ’90s. Larson will be joined by Samuel L. Jackson, who will reprise his role as Nick Fury.

Now, just as Avengers: Infinity War is about to be released, we are learning more about some of the upcoming titles coming after the epic ensemble film. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke recently about representation and Captain Marvel, including films that helped inspire it like Terminator 2. Check out more on the story below.

When asked about the studio producing films that have more representation, Feige saw it as necessary. He was also reserved on revealing some of the bigger announcements that are a reflection of the society we live in today:

“I think we’re seeing it shift from a very purposeful initiative to just a fact of life, to just a way of doing business. Then there are people we hired that we’re not ready to announce in all different capacities, particularly behind the camera. As Panther has so loudly declared, [representation] can only help you, can only help you tell unique stories, can only help you do things in a new, and unique, and fresh, and exciting way. If you do that, audiences will notice it, and appreciate it, and support it.”

Since we are in the subject of keeping things fresh, Feige talked about how Captain Marvel is a period piece, and how we would get to see characters in a whole new light:

“We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, ‘You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.’ Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across. That meant she could be the singular hero, but place it within timing of the MCU. It also got us talking about different genres, exploring this notion of sort of the “˜90s action film. We hadn’t necessarily done anything like that before either, so there are definitely homages to our favorite “˜90s action films within Captain Marvel.”

Since the film will take place in the ’90s, there has to be ’90s aesthetics to it. But it goes far beyond just the set pieces and costume design. Feige wants to make sure it feels like something that would have come out of the ’90s, which means it will draw inspiration from great action films of the decade like Terminator 2: Judgment Day:

“Well, not necessarily talking about any particulars of the story, but the action elements Terminator 2. That’s about as iconic as you get, looking at kind of those cool street level fights, street-level car chases, and fun stuff like that. That being said, much of the movie takes place in outer space, as you might think a Captain Marvel movie would. Like all of our genre inspirations, there are bits and pieces here and there.”

Captain Marvel will also star Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, and DeWanda Wise. It opens in theaters on March 6, 2019.
