Steven Spielberg‘s Ready Player One will hit theaters in a matter of weeks, but for those who got an early look at the film at SXSW, the result was a mixed bag of reactions. Some call it one of Spielberg’s best films to date, while others say it’s being overhyped.
See some of the early reactions below.
Here are some of the early reactions to the film from critics who saw a preview of it at SXSW:
I don’t know if I have ever seen a #SXSW crowd cheer on a movie the way they just cheered on #ReadyPlayerOne. We haven’t seen this Spielberg in a long time – it’s just pure entertainment and it’s hard not to watch it without a dorky smile on your face the whole time
READY PLAYER ONE: The #SXSW crowd ate it up! The pop culture references are a LOT of fun, geeky glee to see everything together on the big screen. I just wanted more of the real world & more character backstory. I definitely recommend reading the book first! pic.twitter.com/afGpsxdzr8
READY PLAYER ONE feels like Spielberg watched a ton of Luc Besson movies and decided to outdo them. In terms of pure spectacle, it’s the most astonishing thing he’s done. Never underestimate Steve. #SXSW
#ReadyPlayerOne is classic Spielberg fun! What a blast, can't wait to see it again. Rewards repeat viewings. Tons of great references, visuals and heart. So kick ass it blew the speakers!
The biggest surprise for me is how good those wacky avatars look and feel, it’s maybe the most successful part of the film and I am shocked to report this

There’s one point where it tries to critic-proof itself with “a fanboy can always tell a hater.”
K. Wait for the “this one is for the fans” defense in 3, 2,…

Just. These movies matter so much to people. To just slap on iconography and references like they are stickers on a bedroom door. It’s such shallow use. It exploits your love for these things instead of earning it.

You’ll also hear the crowd went wild throughout. Totally true. These opinions are mine. I don’t pretend I represent all of the premiere audience or even all critics. I hated this. If you’re excited about it, I genuinely hope you enjoy it.

I will say it was rough hearing a packed theater laugh uproariously at TJ Miller’s bits. And I’m curious if there was ever a cut of the film where we see his non-CGI’d face as we do with every other significant CG character in the film.
It certainly looks like the positives outweigh the negatives. No film is perfect, and even great filmmakers like Spielberg have had a few missteps in his career. But despite all of that, Ready Player One looks like the perfect kind of eye candy for anyone who wants nostalgic fodder.
The film stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the science fiction action adventure “Ready Player One,” based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name, which has become a worldwide phenomenon. The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
Ready Player One opens in theaters on March 29, 2018.
