Captain Marvel concept art

Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel will be a period piece that takes us back to the 1990s. In it, we will see Academy Award winner Brie Larson play as Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who is endowed with cosmic alien powers and gets caught up in an intergalactic war between two alien races. But it’s not so much about the film’s plot or setting as it is who we will be seeing again. Seeing again as in, characters who we thought wouldn’t appear on screen ever again, are returning to the MCU once more. Just in a different timeline.

We know that Nick Fury is in this, so it only makes sense that Clark Gregg would return to reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson. And because the film is about the war between the Kree and the Skrull, Lee Pace will be reprising his role as Ronan. More on this and a brand new photo, below.

The announcement, which was made on Marvel.com, confirms a variety of things. First and foremost, the start of principal photography, which will take place in Fresno, California, as well as locations in Louisiana, including Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. The setting will also play a huge role in terms of how the action plays out in the film. According to previous reports, some of the action sequences will be inspired by films like Terminator 2.

Minor spoilers, three actors who have appeared in two different Marvel Studios films have had their respective characters die. Agent Coulson (Gregg) met his tragic end in The Avengers, when Loki impaled him through the heart with the Glow Stick Of Destiny. Ronan The Accuser and Korath The Pursuer both met their ends at the hands of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Coulson will most likely be paired up with Fury, as the two have been seen together a lot in Phase 1 of the MCU. However, it will be interesting to see the dynamic between the two before we got to really know them as the Phase 1 was starting to roll out.

It will also be interesting to see how Ronan and Korath met.

Captain Marvel also marks the first time that a woman is a co-director of a major Marvel Studios motion picture. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind, Half Nelson) will helm the film, using a script written by themselves, and a group of female writers that consist of Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, First Man), Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider, upcoming Sherlock Holmes 3), and Liz Flahive & Carly Mensch (Glow).

Principal photography will be done by Ben Davis (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange). Other behind-the-scenes credits include Oscar®- nominated production designer Andy Nicholson (Gravity, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), costume designer Sanja Hays (The Fate of the Furious, Star Trek: Beyond), editors Elliot Graham (Steve Jobs, Molly’s Game) and Debbie Berman (Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming”), two-time Oscar nominee, visual effects supervisor Christopher Townsend (Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), stunt coordinator Jim Churchman (Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange and Ant-Man) and six-time Oscar nominee, special effects supervisor Dan Sudick (Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther).

Captain Marvel also stars Ben Mendelsohn, who is said to be playing the lead villain. Jude Law will reportedly be paying the alien Captain Mar-Vell. Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte,, and McKenna Grace will also appear in the film.

Captain Marvel will open in theaters on March 8, 2019.
