Fox Reschedules ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ and ‘New Mutants’ To A Later Date
  |  @   |

Studios rescheduling their films is a very common practice. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small film or a big-budget blockbuster flick. Some of the time they move their films to an earlier date, like Disney did with Avengers: Infinity War. Other times, which is most often, a film gets pushed back to a later date.

This is what 20th Century Fox is doing with X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants (again). Both film will now hit theaters in 2019. Check out the new dates below.

Deadline was the first to report on the news.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which was scheduled to open November 2, 2018, will now open on February 14, 2019. It’s not clear why the move is happening. But one would have to guess is that director Simon Kinberg needs more time to polish the film off. Since it is following the abysmal X-Men: Apocalypse, it only makes sense that they want to get this film right. But Dark Phoenix will not be alone that busy weekend, so I imagine we will be hearing some rescheduling news from the other studios who want to get away from the X-Men competition. WB’s Isn’t it Romantic, Fox’s The Kid Who Would Be King, Universal’s untitled Blumhouse Productions project III, and Paramount’s Instant Family all open that same weekend.

Taking that empty November 2, 2018, date will be the Freddy Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Meanwhile New Mutants will now open August 2, 2019. It was originally scheduled to open this year, and was pushed back to February 22, 2019. But before we all panic about Josh Boone‘s X-Men film with a horror twist being pushed back an entire year, let’s consider how Dark Phoenix would have opened in the same month. In order to avoid that problem and any confusion, it only makes sense that one of them get pushed back even further.

Not only will there not be any confusion, but there will be just enough distance so that the marketing team can have some breathing room to work on the respective campaigns.
