‘Doctor Strange’ Writer and Director Want To Come Back For ‘Doctor Strange 2’; Have Ideas To Make Title Hero’s Life A Nightmare
  |  @   |

Marvel Studios likes to announce sequels to their movies before or after a film’s release. Whenever it’s the former, it’s because the film is tracking well or got a very warm reception from critics who saw it early. Whenever it’s the latter, it’s because the film did really well at the box office. But it’s different for Doctor Strange. While the film did well at the box office, it wasn’t one of the studio’s best efforts. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t get a sequel, but the fact that it was so successful and the studio hasn’t announced one yet is, well, strange.

Now Doctor Strange screenwriter C. Robert Cargill is talking a little bit about the sequel and his plans for what we could see in it, including the villains and more. See what he had to say below.

Speaking to MovieWeb, Cargill talked about how Marvel movies work best in and out of their usual three-film structure. Though they don’t have the groundwork quite yet, Cargill has been talking to director Scott Derrickson about the sequel and how Nightmare will play a role:

“Marvel movies work in threes. They also work outside of their threes. Some of the better Marvel films have more than one villain in them. Me and Scott have not laid the groundwork for it but what I can say is that I have a feeling that whatever Nightmare is involved with, Baron Mordo, being somebody who considers himself the defender of natural law will have something to do with it.”

At the end of Doctor Strange, we saw Mordo walking away from his sect after he learned the horrible truth about his trusted teacher, the Ancient One, was drawing power from Dormammu, a dark and evil force. In one of the end credit scenes, we saw that he was eliminating any other sorcerers because he felt there were already too many on Earth.

So it made sense that he would be the big bad in the sequel. However, Cargill says that isn’t the case. While Mordo will be the villain, he will have some help from Nightmare. In fact, the idea is to take Mordo to “Loki levels of awesomeness.”

“For those of you who have ever read the comics, you know that Baron Mordo has a very particular arc, and that’s something we discussed with Chiwetel while working on the first movie. And part of the reason Chiwetel wanted to play Mordo was because he has a definitive ending as a character and it’s such a fascinating ending. And I do know that whether we’re attached or not, that Marvel plans on working towards that ending and fully realizing Mordo as more than just a cardboard cutout villain, but actually taking him to kind of Loki levels of awesomeness. That’s the goal with him.”

Mordo was indeed a nice counter to Strange’s unorthodox style. And we could see a lot of that play in the sequel if we get one. But for right now, we will just have to play the waiting game. That is, unless Strange dies in Avengers: Infinity War. But the way that Cargill talks about his plans for the sequel, it looks like that may not happen.
