Dwayne Johnson Unsure About His Future In The ‘Fast and Furious’ Franchise

There is more than driving going on in the streets of the Fast and Furious franchise. There is drama also going on behind the scenes. And it is having an effect on the morale of the cast.

This is having a direct effect on the franchise. And it doesn’t look good. Even though Dwayne Johnson has a role in the spinoff Hobbs and Shaw, which will have him appear alongside Jason Statham, the actor doesn’t know if he has a future with the franchise. More on the story below.

First, there was the feud between Johnson and Vin Diesel during the production of Fate of the Furious. The two posted vague social media posts about their displeasure working with each other but never directly saying who they were unhappy to work with. However, since it was only those two who were posting, it only made sense that they were talking about each other. In the end, they said they said they worked out their difference. We all saw how that worked out in Fate of the Furious as the two stars were never seen together in one shot. Then there was Michelle Rodriguez asking for a better role for her and her female co-stars – whether or not she will get that remains to be seen. Then there was Tyrese Gibson, who threatened to leave the franchise if Johnson was in Fast 9. So a lot has gone on within the franchise.

In a Rolling Stone interview piece it’s revealed that Johnson is a pretty giving person, having earned that reputation from being an athlete. And even if he is a big-time movie star, he makes an effort to get to know everyone’s name on set. That kind of professionalism is rare to see, which the piece explains how the drama between him and Diesel unfolded during the production of Fate of the Furious.

Just before production ended, Johnson put out an Instagram post calling out a “chicken shit” and “candy ass” co-star. It soon became clear that he was talking about Diesel. Confirming what everyone suspected in the latest sequel, that he and Diesel did not shoot any of their scenes together.

But the actor says their feud could be boiled down to a disagreement about professionalism. Here’s what he told Rolling Stone:

“Vin and I had a few discussions, including an important face-to-face in my trailer. And what I came to realize is that we have a fundamental difference in philosophies on how we approach moviemaking and collaborating. It took me some time, but I’m grateful for that clarity. Whether we work together again or not.”

That last bit is a bit concerning since the two of them are considered to be major stars of the Fast and Furious franchise, so the interview went even further, going as far to ask if Johnson would appear in the ninth installment:

“I’m not quite sure. Right now I’m concentrating on making the spinoff as good as it can be. But I wish him all the best, and I harbor no ill will there, just because of the clarity we have. Actually, you can erase that last part about ‘no ill will.’ We’ll just keep it with the clarity.”

Well that last bit about erasing “no ill will” doesn’t speak well about Diesel and Johnson’s relationship. Honestly, it makes a lot of sense that we are getting the spinoff.

Hobbs and Shaw is expected to hit theaters on July 26, 2019. Universal has tentatively scheduled Fast and Furious 9 for April 10, 2020, release.
