The concept of The Purge makes for a very intriguing film while also having us question the socio-economic disparities that exist today. It is a modern-day slasher with a political twist. During the franchise, we got to see how the rich were able to protect themselves while also taking part in killing, while those who were unable to afford such luxuries were forced to fend for themselves or also take part in the lawless night.
Now, we will get to see that world once more in The First Purge. A new trailer for the prequel has just dropped, which will chronicle how it all began. Check it out here below.
Considering that this is a prequel that takes place during the first annual Purge, it only makes sense that the film will not look like any of its predecessors. Marisa Tomei plays a character who invented the concept, although, it looks like she is having some doubts about it. But the political higher-ups believe that this must continue for a stronger America. And we can guess how The First Purge will end.
After directing the original Purge trilogy, James DeMonaco takes a step back from the franchise. Gerard McMurray will direct, using a script written by DeMonaco.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge. To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
The First Purge also stars Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, and Luna Lauren Velez. It opens in theaters on July 4, 2018.
