Cathy Yan To Direct New Harley Quinn Movie Starring Margot Robbie
  |  @   |

Wonder Woman marked a shift in the filmmaking dynamic. Not only was it the first female-superhero led film to be released in the new age of superhero films, it was also the first to be directed by a female filmmaker. Now the studio has found another female director to helm an untitled Harley Quinn movie, with Margot Robbie returning to reprise her role that she made famous in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.

According to new reports, Cathy Yan is in talks to direct the Harley Quinn movie. While this may be one of many DCEU titles that has the character in it, it appears that there are plans to condense some of those into one film. More on the story below.

Deadline says that the film is based on Birds of Prey, which was going to see Harley Quinn teaming up with other characters, such as Black Canary, Batgirl, and Huntress.

But there appears to be some confusion about the title itself. Rumors of a Harley Quinn movie started to swirl after the release of Suicide Squad. Soon after, WB hired Christina Hodson to write the Birds of Prey script this new project is based on. She will also write the Batgirl script.

However, Birds of Prey is a superhero team. So having Harley Quinn in it or possibly lead it adds to some of that confusion. There are a couple of sure things though. For one thing, the Harley Quinn movie will have female characters in it and most of the creative braintrust are female.

Harley Quinn was one of the very few bright spots of the very messy Suicide Squad. So it makes sense that we would get to see more of her in other films. But this development doesn’t look like it will have any affect on Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens, and the currently untitled Joker and Harley Quinn movie. All titles would, of course, have Quinn in them.

Yan is the second female director to helm a major studio comic book movie, and the first Asian female filmmaker to helm one. She is best known for a number of shorts and her first feature film, Dead Pigs. Her film is due out later this year. Before all of that, she was a reporter for Wall Street Journal, and one of the youngest to have her headlines appear on the front page.

The Harley Quinn movie is expected to start filming at the end of the year or early next year, after Robbie completes her work on Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
