J.J. Abrams Says ‘Cloverfield’ Sequel Being Developed, ‘Overlord’ Not Part Of Franchise

Cloverfield

For a very long time, we were under the assumption that Overlord was connected to the Cloverfield universe.

That being said it looks like Overlord, the sci-fi World War II film with soldiers fighting Nazis and their supernatural forces, is not one. However, J.J. Abrams, who has been a producer on all the Cloverfield films, says that a true sequel is in the works. More on the story below.

Per Variety, Abrams described Overlord to CinemaCon attendees as “batshit crazy.” He also revealed that the film will be one of the few R-rated films to be released by Bad Robot – Joy Ride being the other.

Based on the audience’s reaction to the footage, Abrams’ description holds true. Apparently, this is a historical horror film unlike any other. There were “eerie shots of dead soldiers hanging from trees, genetically modified Nazis, and disembodied and fanged heads.” That in of itself already sounds terrifying, and like a total blast to watch on the big screen. I am almost happy that this isn’t in any way connected to the Cloverfield films.

But the idea that a “true, dedicated” Cloverfield sequel, as Abrams describes it, is on the way is suspect. The marketing for these sequels is anything but conventional. So when they say a “true” sequel, it could mean a direct follow-up to the original or it could mean one in terms that stay true to the mystery box that Abrams as crafted throughout his entire career.

That being said, Paramount is working on a sequel. So of course, Abrams is keeping mum about it. Or maybe he is just trying to mess with us again. In fact, sources close to the production say that Overlord is connected to the Cloverfield universe. However, unlike The Cloverfield Paradox which was released on Netflix, Overlord will be released in theaters.

Remember, Paramount tends to surprise us with the Cloverfield films. 10 Cloverfield Lane, for example, came out of no where just weeks before release. And even though it wasn’t a great film, The Cloverfield Paradox was released on Netflix on the night we got the first trailer.

So as of right now, Overlord is scheduled for an October 26, 2018 release. Perhaps a few weeks prior to its release will we find out whether or not this is truly a Cloverfield film. Of course, we will keep you up to date on any new developments should they come in.

Overlord is directed by Julius Avery, and it stars Wyatt Russell and Bokeem Woodbine.
