‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’: Box Office Estimates Predict Record-Breaking Memorial Day Opening
  |  @   |

Despite all of the behind-the-scenes issues that may have occurred during the Solo: A Star Wars Story production, the film still has that Star Wars tag on it, which almost guarantees it will do big things at the box office.

And based on what we have seen so far, it is looking like the film will be a huge hit. In fact, early tracking says it could break the Memorial Day weekend box office record. More on the story below.

According to Deadline, industry projections (not from Disney) say Solo: A Star Wars Story could earn up to $170M-plus at the domestic box office on its opening weekend. And because it opens on Memorial Day weekend, the latest spinoff has one extra day to work with.

It’s important to note that these are only predictions and not actual confirmations. So it’s very likely that these numbers could change, especially since reviews play a small role.

But if the projections hold, it would put Solo above Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End ($139.8 million) for Memorial Day weekend openings. Other top earners include Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($126.9 million), X-Men: The Last Stand ($122.8), Fast and Furious 6 ($117 million), and X-Men: Days of Future Past ($110.5 million). These numbers are from Box Office Mojo.

And like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Solo will probably not have the same kind of success that Star Wars: The Force Awakens had. Still, a projected $170 million is nothing to laugh at.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo befriends his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and meets the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Directed by Ron Howard, using a script written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich as Solo, alongside Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo, and Paul Bettany.

It opens in theaters on May 25, 2018.
