Bleecker Street has released an official trailer for Papillon starring Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek.

The movie is based on memoirs of Henri Charrière, and tells the story of a man who forms an unlikely alliance in hopes of escaping his wrongful imprisonment.

You can read a synopsis and watch the new trailer below.

Based on the international best-selling autobiographic books “Papillon” and “Banco”, the film follows the epic story of Henri “Papillon” Charrière (Charlie Hunnam), a safecracker from the Parisian underworld who is framed for murder and condemned to life in the notorious penal colony on Devil’s Island. Determined to regain his freedom, Papillon forms an unlikely alliance with a convicted counterfeiter Louis Dega (Rami Malek), who in exchange for protection, agrees to finance Papillon’s escape.

Henri Charrière’s story has been adapted once before in the 1973 film of the same name, which starred Steve McQueen in the role of Charrière and Dustin Hoffman in the role of Dega.

This latest adaptation is directed by Michael Noer (R, Northwest), from a screenplay penned by Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners, Contraband).

The movie will be released in limited theaters on August 24th.
