We are accustomed to seeing very aggressive bank robbers in films. Some so hostile they resort to taking hostages or mowing down people with their heavy artillery. But every once in a while, you get a different kind of bank robber. One that is unconventional. And that is what you will see in The Old Man and the Gun starring Robert Redford.
Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for the film, which doesn’t hide the fact that it is partially based on a true story. But the most interesting thing about it is that this film feels unlike any other bank robbery or heist film in terms of its cast, how it was shot, and even the music. Everything about it feels like a callback to the movies of old. Check out the trailer below.
The film comes to us from director David Lowery (A Ghost Story, Pete’s Dragon). If you are familiar with those films, you know that you are going to get this timeless feel to it. But even in this film, we get a sense that The Old Man and the Gun is a newly discovered film that has been hiding away in some forgotten vault. It looks like it was shot on 16 mm. Even the music choice fits into that area. All of that makes it feel as though Redford is right in his comfort zone. Playing a cool and sophisticated character who just happens to rob banks.
Sissy Spacek also stars as Redford’s potential love interest. Watching him explain what he does for a living to her, it’s easy to see how one might fall in love with the mystery and intrigue. Redford has just an interesting way of storytelling, and I cannot wait to see more of this.
Casey Affleck will play the FBI agent tasked with capturing Redford.
Danny Glover, Tom Waits, and Tika Sumpter also star.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN is based on the true story of Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford), from his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck), who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek), who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.
The Old Man and the Gun opens in theaters on September 28, 2018.
