Welcome To Marwen

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for Welcome To Marwen.

The based on a true story film is directed by Robert Zemeckis and stars Steve Carell as someone who survives a traumatic assault by neo-nazis. While his path to recovery will be long and hard, he uses his artistic imagination to restore his human spirit. Check out the trailer below.

Zemeckis has a penchant for using special effects. Although, that has worked against him at times. But for Welcome To Marwen it seems to work. But as heartwarming as the story is, I feel like I just watched the whole movie in one sitting. It has his suffering and the trauma that led to it. His struggles to overcome his trauma. The light humor that comes from his imagination. The bonds he makes. Confronting his assailants. Then there is the “you should leave these dolls behind” but then the “I need these dolls.” etc. It’s literally all there. And I kind of feel disappointed that all those emotional cues are wasted in one single trailer.

Welcome To Marwen is actually based on a true story inspired by Jeff Malmberg‘s 2010 documentary Marwencol. Check out the story that inspired the film, here.

While I am hesitant about the film, I am still interested in seeing everything. Maybe Zemeckis — who we found out earlier this week is nearing a deal to direct a new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches — has a few surprises in store for us. It is an uplifting story and one that seems all too timely. We definitely need more films like this and I just hope that I am wrong about how I feel about the film.

Leslie Mann, Eiza González, Janelle Monáe, Gwendoline Christie, Diane Kruger, and Merritt Wever also star.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Welcome to Marwen tells the miraculous true story of one broken man’s fight as he discovers how artistic imagination can restore the human spirit. When a devastating attack shatters Mark Hogancamp (Carell) and wipes away all memories, no one expected recovery. Putting together pieces from his old and new life, Mark meticulously creates a wondrous town where he can heal and be heroic. As he builds an astonishing art installation””a testament to the most powerful women he knows””through his fantasy world, he draws strength to triumph in the real one.

In a bold, wondrous and timely film from this revolutionary pioneer of contemporary cinema, Welcome to Marwen shows that when your only weapon is your imagination”¦you’ll find courage in the most unexpected place.

Welcome to Marwen opens in theaters on November 21, 2018.
