Greta Gerwig Sets Sights On ‘Little Women’; Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Saoirse Ronan, More In Talks

It looks like Greta Gerwig has found her next directorial effort following her Academy Award-nominated Lady Bird. According to new reports, Gerwig is in talks to direct a retelling of the coming of age novel Little Women.

The film looks to also feature a star-studded ensemble cast, with Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Florence Pugh, and her Lady Bird stars Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet all in talks for roles. More on the story below.

According to Variety, the new telling of Little Women has been in the works over at Columbia for some time. Gerwig was initially brought in to write a draft, but after her success with Lady Bird, the studio is working on courting her to direct the film.

Should she sign on, it would be a reunion Gerwig, Ronan, and Chalamet. All three worked together on Lady Bird, for which Gerwig earned an Oscar nomination for Best Director, and Ronan for Best Actress.

The film will be a new adaptation of author Louisa May Alcott‘s novel of the same name. The coming-of-age story follows the March sisters in post-Civil War America as they try to navigate their lives and relationships from childhood to adulthood. No word on who will play who just yet, but various sites like /Film and IndieWire say Ronan would play Jo, Stone would play Meg, and Pugh would play Amy. Meanwhile, the studio is also looking at actresses to play the role of Beth. As for Streep, she would play Marmee, the mother of the four sisters. Chalamet would play the boy-next-door Laurie Laurence.

This would not be the first time that there has been an adaptation for Little Women, for either screen. BBC aired their adaptation last year. But the most recognized one would be the 1994 telling starring Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, Susan Sarandon and Kirsten Dunst.

Variety says that if this deal happens, it would put the project on the fast track to production. Streep will finish her work on season two of HBO’s Big Little Lies. She can next be seen in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns. Ronan has just completed her work on Mary Queen of the Scots. And Stone is considering other options, including this, after finishing The Favourite. And Chalamet — who like Gerwig and Ronan was also nominated for an Academy Award recently, his for Best Actor in a second Best Picture nominee, Call Me by Your Name — has started production on Netflix’s The King.

A new telling with fresh and recognizable faces will introduce the title to a new generation. It should be fun to see Gerwig tackle yet another coming-of-age story following her directorial debut. And we all saw how that worked out for her. So let’s hope she can land this cast.
