A pair of images have arrived offering us our first peek at Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the much anticipated sequel to 2014’s Godzilla.
The movie, which is directed by Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat, Krampus), picks up about five years after the events of the first movie—the same as the two movies themselves by the time King of the Monsters is released—at a time when the world is still understandably shocked over the insanity of actual giant monsters showing up and wreaking havoc.
In addition to the images, Dougherty also shared some info on King of the Monsters including whether or not it sets up the blockbuster mega-showdownGodzilla vs. Kong. You can find it all below.
Talking about how people are taking Godzilla’s arrival in the previous movie, Dougherty said:
“The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we would react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting. But there’s paranoia and endless speculation about whether he is the only one out there or whether we’re threatened by others like his kind.”
Of course there are others. Such as King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, who all appear in the sequel. Dougherty touched on Rodan specifically:
“Rodan’s been kind of a sidekick character, but I’ve always had a soft spot for him. In a lot of ways he’s more powerful than Godzilla. He’s like this winged A-bomb. I think we’ve done him justice.”
The director was also asked if he could expand on the title monster’s “atomic breath” shown in one of the images below. Unfortunately he couldn’t offer many details at the moment, but was sure to drop a tease:
“Not without giving away too much. But it takes place at a very key moment and it’s a sort of call to arms.”
Finally, the big question. Does King of the Monsters set up the battle of titans we can expect in Godzilla vs. Kong?
“It’s not like we’re bending over backwards to introduce Kong, but there’s definitely some bread crumbs.”
Good enough for me.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on May 31, 2019. Click right here for more on the movie.
