The first Zombieland was a gut-wrenching horror comedy from Ruben Fleischer. Though it has been nearly 10 years since the film opened in theaters, fans — or what’s left of them — have been asking for a sequel. One that would reunite original cast Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin once more.
Well, now the wait is over. According to recent reports, Zombieland 2 is happening, and everyone who was involved in the first is coming back for more. Check out the full story below.
THR says Fleischer, Stone, Harrelson, Eisenberg, and Breslin will all return to reprise their respective roles. Stone and Breslin played Wichita and Little Rock, two con-artist sisters who survived on their wits. Harrelson played Tallahassee, a gun-toting zombie killer with a heart of gold and a soft spot for Twinkies. Then there’s Eisenberg’s Columbus, a geeky timid man who has been surviving on a set of rules.
Original Zombieland writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese also return. You may recognize the two as they also wrote Deadpool and its recent sequel as well.
According to the report, the film will take “the quartet from the White House to the American heartland as they face off against new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors.” On top of that, they will “face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.”
The first Zombieland was made on a modest budget of $24 million. It, however, went on to gross over $75 million domestically, and $102.3 million worldwide. Not a bad return of investment. But Sony, the studio that helped produce and distribute the film, would not comment on the budget for the sequel.
Here’s what Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch said in a statement:
“This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time “” and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse and Abigail. These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”
The project will begin production in January 2019 and be released on October 2019, as Wernick and Reese hoped, just in time for the 10 year anniversary of the first film.
