Zazie Beetz Deadpool 2

It’s starting to look like you can exist in two superhero universes. Well, at least for some actors. Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz could be the latest person to make the jump from Marvel to DC.

According to new reports the actress, who also stars in Atlanta, is in talks to play a role in the new Joker origins film starring Joaquin Phoenix in the title role. More on the story below.

The Hollywood Reporter says plot details are being kept under lock and key. But according to their report, if Beetz does sign on she would play a single mother who catches the interest of the man who eventually becomes the Joker.

In previous reports we learned that Joker is an “exploration of a man disregarded by society” that is “not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” According to director Todd Phillips, the film will be a gritty and hard-boiled crime drama in the same vein as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The King of Comedy.

As previously reported, the film will also draw inspiration from the Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke, which many consider to be the definitive comic that explores the Joker’s origins. In it, an unnamed chemical engineer, who is trying to support his family, tries to make a new living by being a stand-up comedian. However, he fails miserably. And in a desperate attempt to support his family, he helps two criminals break into the chemical plant he used to work at. However, in a cruel twist of fate, the man falls into a chemical vat, which leads him to transform into the Joker.

So could Beetz end up playing the wife? It certainly looks that way. But for right now, everything is just speculation. For all we know she could be playing an entirely new character. Remember, the Joker was already married before he became the Clown Prince of Crime. And here, we see that Beetz will play the single mother who catches the Joker’s eye. Maybe she’ll be someone who helps make audiences sympathize with the Joker?

This will be a dark turn for the character who has never gotten a true in-depth character study in any of the films he has been in.

Beetz can be seen playing Domino in Deadpool 2. She also can be seen alongside Donald Glover in the Emmy-winning Atlanta. Her upcoming roles include Steven Soderbergh’s High Flying Bird and an untitled Noah Hawley film starring Natalie Portman.

Joker is expected to begin filming in New York in September. Warner Bros. will release the film on October 4, 2019.
