SHAZAM! Header Image

At some point in time the DC film universe had to stop being dark and brooding. And it looks like that time is now. The cast and crew of SHAZAM! were at San Diego Comic-Con to prove that the DC Extended Universe is not all doom and gloom with the first trailer for the film.

It looks fun, humorous, and it has plenty of laughs. Check out the first trailer for SHAZAM!, below.

Shazam may not be a household name like some of his other fellow heroes, but it looks like he will have fun climbing up the ranks. The film toys with the idea that everyone can be a superhero. Indeed, young Billy Batson (Asher Angel) does possess some selfless and heroic qualities. Qualities that get the attention of an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou) who believes that Billy is the right person to become the next Shazam (Zachary Levi).

Although the orphan, who was once skeptical of superheroes, will now have to adjust to his newfound powers and responsibilities. And he will get a little help to become the hero he was meant to be from his orphan brother Freddie Freeman (Dylan Grazer).

Now there was some question as to if the film was going to be set within the DCEU, but shots of newspaper headlines with Superman’s name on it plus Batman’s Batarang sitting on a drawer establishes its place within that universe. Unfortunately, don’t expect to see Shazam fight his greatest nemesis, Black Adam, right off the bat. Instead, the villain of this film will be Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

But the one noticeable thing about SHAZAM! is its stark contrast in tone. It feels like much lighter fare which comes with family friendly themes and superhero aesthetics, all of which should help distance itself from the darker and brooding films of the DCEU, while also showing the audience that the DCEU can be fun too.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word””SHAZAM!””this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart””inside a ripped, godlike body””Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

The cast for the film also includes Mary, played Grace Fulton (Annabelle: Creation); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (This is Us); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (Fresh Off the Boat); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (Hawaii Five-O) round out the rest of Billy Batson’s family. Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead) and Marta Milans (Killer Women) play their adoptive parents.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, SHAZAM! opens in theaters on April 5th.
