To Another Abyss!
Paperback | Kindle
Written by Zach Bartlett
Publisher: Spaceboy Books
Release date: May 25, 2018

Greg Withers runs an art gallery, one his parents gave to him to since it not only gives Greg something to do, it also fits with their lifestyle and image. He really does want it to be something real, and has his eccentric punk friend Decca help him give a grant to an eager artist. Unfortunately, things don’t go quite as he envisions when a douchey filmmaker hoodwinks him into giving him the grant, and doing the opposite of what Greg, Decca, and anybody with any sense of art would do. Just as this seems to be the biggest problem, a globby alien appears through a broken painting aka portal and wants the attention it deserves for its superiority. What will Greg, Decca, douchey Ian, and their real artist friend Myra do?

More below.

The story started off slow, more so because art galleries are not the most exciting setting to me. Bartlett’s characters, especially Decca and Ian, were particularly interesting without being caricatures of type. The second half of the novel was definitely more exciting than the first half, and super funny, especially with the four hapless humans trying to secretly save the world from a globby world dominator, who is funny as well. There are some Abbott and Costello moves, and I kept expecting some Tom and Jerry ones.

All in all, an enjoyable, funny, and quick read.

Official Synopsis:

Greg Withers, an idle rich twentysomething, has decided to lend a philanthropic hand to the Pioneer Valley arts scene and his punk friend Decca is more than happy to help him redistribute his wealth. Unfortunately, the indie filmmaker they’re working with accidentally summons an Ancient Unspeakable Eldritch Horror on the first day of filming. And the creature seems to have artistic ambitions of its own!

As their art gallery begins to fill with monstrous fish-people who certainly aren’t going to buy anything, Greg and Decca need to figure out how to stop an Elder God with poor taste before it costs them their lives. Or (arguably) even worse, their reputations.
