Venom Starring Tom Hardy

Sony Pictures has released the third and final trailer for Venom.

The latest releases comes just a few short days after the film had a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. Of course, their reaction may not be the best barometer. But still, if you are looking for an alien symbiote bonding to a human, Venom may just be your film. Check out the latest trailer below.

It’s not so much that the trailer is CGI heavy with the alien parasite and its powers, it just looks and feels weird that a character with deep connections to Spider-Man won’t have the webslinger in it.

Director Ruben Fleischer pretty much has the basics of the character and their backstory: an alien symbiote bonds to a washed-up journalist, and feeds on its host’s darkest emotions. Tom Hardy, who plays, Eddie Brock, looks like he is having fun playing double duty as both Brock and Venom himself. And this latest trailer proves that he won’t be the only one sporting an alien suit.

As we reported earlier the film looked to be based on two different story arcs, “Lethal Protector” and “Planet of the Symbiotes.” But now that doesn’t seem to be the case. In “Lethal Protector,” Venom travels to San Francisco, where he becomes more of an anti-hero. But it is starting to look like, Venom will also pull from “Separation Anxiety,” where the Life Foundation is able to separate the two and create five different spawns. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen. The bigger question is, will this be a hit with fans, who have already had mixed reactions to the previously released trailers.

Again, seeing it on a computer screen simply doesn’t do the film any justice. Obviously, it’s going to look very different on the big screen, where we will see some pretty amazing alien parasite fights. One of which will pit Riz Ahmed‘s Riot against Hardy’s Venom. So I remain slightly optimistic that this film could be at least entertaining enough. But will it be good enough to launch a franchise and a Spider-Man-less universe? We will just have to wait and see.

And did Venom really say “Like a turd in the wind?” If so, writers Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, Kelly Marcel, and Will Beall should just map out the entire Spider-Man-less universe, because that line alone is just so silly, and yet, based on the tone of the trailer, it feels like it fits into that world.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.

Venom also stars Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, and Jenny Slate. It opens in theaters on October 5, 2018.
