‘The Sandlot’ Prequel Being Developed By Original Writer and Director
  |  @   |

It’s being reported that a prequel to the summertime favorite The Sandlot, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is now being developed.

The prequel is being developed by 20th Century Fox and the original movie’s writer and director, David Mickey Evans, who along with Austin Reynolds is co-writing the screenplay.

Details on what the prequel will be about are scarce, but according to the report it will include the legend of the Beast we saw briefly recapped during a treehouse gathering in the first movie. If this is the case, they better cast Chauncey Leopardi (the actor who played Michael “Squints” Palledorous in the original and the 2007 direct-to-video third movie in the franchise The Sandlot: Heading Home) to play his police chief grandfather Squidman Palledorous.

In addition to Leopardi, the cast of the first movie included Tom Guiry as Scotty “You’re Killing Me” Smalls, Mike Vitar as Benjamin “Benny” Franklin Rodriguez, Patrick Renna as Hamilton “Ham” Porter, Marty York as Alan “Yeah-Yeah” McClennan, Brandon Quintin Adams as Kenny DeNunez, Grant Gelt as Bertram Grover Weeks, Victor DiMattia as Timmy Timmons, and Shane Obedzinski as Tommy “Repeat” Timmons, with Karen Allen and Denis Leary as Scotty’s mother and stepdad, and James Earl Jones as the owner of the Beast, Mr. Mertle.

David Mickey Evans’ previous credits include The Sandlot 2, which he wrote and directed; Radio Flyer, which he wrote and was an uncredited director on; and Ed and Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers, which he was a writer on. According to IMDb he’s also a co-director on something currently filming called Oh! Squints III, which sounds a lot like something related to The Sandlot but I couldn’t find any information on what it actually is.

If this prequel happens, it would be the feature debut of Evans’ co-writer Austin Reynolds, who has previously written and directed multiple shorts.

No word yet on who might direct and star, or when we might see the movie.
