‘ALF’ Reboot Being Developed By Warner Bros. Television

ALF

We’ve already seen plenty of popular old shows brought back to life in recent years, and now ALF could be joining in on the trend.

It’s being reported that Warner Bros. Television is currently developing a reboot of the ’80s series, which followed a family and the alien who lives with them.

The source of this report stresses that things are only in the earliest stages of development, so there’s not many details on the project and there’s a chance it won’t even end up happening. That said, it is something that’s been in consideration since May.

Almost three years ago now NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt was talking about a Coach reboot when he joked “And if that works, ALF: The Series is next.” Interestingly enough the Coach reboot, which had been given a 13-episode order, ended up being canceled before it ever happened, and now an ALF revival might just end up happening. No networks, including its original home NBC, are attached to the project at the moment.

For those who are unfamiliar with ALF, the name simply stands for Alien Life Form and the show ran for four seasons from 1986 to 1990. It also spawned a TV movie titled Project: ALF, an animated series, comic, video games, and talk show. Once upon a time, a live-action/CGI hybrid movie was also in the works.

But despite having only run for a few seasons it had a lasting impact on many people, myself included, and it’s still referenced from time to time in current pop culture. ALF himself even shows up here and there, including on Mr. Robot and in Funny or Die’s Donald Trump movie starring Johnny Depp.

The TV series was created by Tom Patchett and Paul Fusco, with Fusco being the familiar voice and puppeteer behind the title character. The late Michu Meszaros played the character in full-body shots requiring someone in a costume. It also starred Max Wright, Anne Schedeen, Andrea Elson, and Benji Gregory as the Tanner family ALF lived with.

Whether or not Fusco would be returning to voice the character again in the potential reboot is not yet known. The report does say that the new version would likely follow ALF living with a new family, so other original cast members probably wouldn’t be back.

For anyone unfamiliar with the show, you can see one of the openings as well as some memorable clips below.
