Disney’s Star Wars TV slate will be expanding beyond the traditional TV broadcast format. In addition to the anime-style Star Wars: Resistance, which will air on The Disney Channel, there is also the live-action series which will air on Disney’s streaming service. We’ve known that Jon Favreau will be working on the series, but no other information about it has been provided… until now. There’s a new report that says the untitled series will have a $100 million production price tag, making it one of the most expensive shows to produce next to HBO’s Game Of Thrones and other big budget shows. Additionally, there is a rumor that says the live-action show could be about the Outer Rim planet Mandalore – the home planet of characters like Jango Fett, Boba Fett, and Sabine. More on the story below.
First the production budget. According to the New York Times, “a live-action “Star Wars” series coming to the platform from Jon Favreau… is expected to cost roughly $100 million for 10 episodes.”
Favreau said, “Star Wars is a big world, and Disney’s new streaming service affords a wonderful opportunity to tell stories that stretch out over multiple chapters.” Ah so many new shows, so little time. But he did not elaborate on what kind of stories he would tell over multiple chapters.
That’s where this latest rumor comes into play.
MakingStarWars has a rumor that says the TV show could take place on Mandalore, the planet of highly-skilled armored warriors known for their T-faced helmets. The series would take place some three years after the events of Return Of The Jedi. Based on their report, the series follows the events of the fall of the Empire, and the state of turmoil Mandalore will have the overcome. “The series is about restoring Mandalore to its former self and how Mandalore sways will have huge galactic ramifications.”
But it will still be awhile before we hear anything substantial from the series. For one thing, the report mentions that Favreau is still working on the new iteration of The Lion King, and it won’t be until after that when we get to hear more from this show. Hopefully by then we can confirm all of the rumors.
Additional rumors include that the show will have new characters instead of some famous Mandalorians. Which makes sense considering how one is dead; the other has been eaten; and Sabine (from Rebels) may be still off on her own adventure. So new characters could be just the thing to get fans interested in a new story while also staying within a familiar setting.
