Foundryside: A Novel
The Founders Trilogy
Hardcover | Kindle
Written by Robert Jackson Bennett
Publisher: Crown Publishing
Release Date: August 21, 2018

Sancia Grado is a gifted thief in two ways. For one, she is very skilled at thieving tactics; two, she can hear scrived objects. When she takes a risky job with a hefty payback, she is puzzled by the “treasure” she grabs from Tevanne. Once she discovers the power she literally holds as well as has within her, she is a target, but has to keep the valuable prize out of the wrong hands, while learning to use it herself.

More below on Foundryside: A Novel, part of The Founders Trilogy, by Robert Jackson Bennett.

Robert Jackson Bennett has thrown us into yet another fantastical world. He hooks us with the first scene in very dirty detail (not sexy dirty). His female thief turned heroine is the best part of the book.

It is dense and complicated and a lot to digest. His Divine Cities books were the same way. It’s a weird dystopian world again, but also very interesting. Just the whole scriving aspect and the meaning behind it, made me feel a little crazy. Sentient non-living objects are very scary. There’s a gold key that’s a smartass. Weird, right?

Jackson Bennett mixes dark humor with fast-paced adventure. Sancia is protagonist worth rooting for as she slowly discovers just how powerful she is.

I am a quick reader, but could only read 20 pages at a time before I had to put it down to think a little. Foundryside is worth a shot, but make sure you have enough time to dive deep. You will join with this world.

Official Synopsis:

In a city that runs on industrialized magic, a secret war will be fought to overwrite reality itself–the first in a dazzling new series from City of Stairs author Robert Jackson Bennett.

Sancia Grado is a thief, and a damn good one. And her latest target, a heavily guarded warehouse on Tevanne’s docks, is nothing her unique abilities can’t handle.

But unbeknownst to her, Sancia’s been sent to steal an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving. The Merchant Houses who control this magic–the art of using coded commands to imbue everyday objects with sentience–have already used it to transform Tevanne into a vast, remorseless capitalist machine. But if they can unlock the artifact’s secrets, they will rewrite the world itself to suit their aims.

Now someone in those Houses wants Sancia dead, and the artifact for themselves. And in the city of Tevanne, there’s nobody with the power to stop them.

To have a chance at surviving””and at stopping the deadly transformation that’s under way””Sancia will have to marshal unlikely allies, learn to harness the artifact’s power for herself, and undergo her own transformation, one that will turn her into something she could never have imagined.
