‘Bond 25’ Delays May Hurt Film’s Chances Of Hitting Release Date

Bond 25 Might Not Hit Release Date

Recently the currently untitled next James Bond film, known for now as Bond 25, took a huge blow in production as director Danny Boyle and the Bond production team split due to creative differences. Though there are a few rumors floating around about the reasons – which include not being able to agree on a cast – it’s not clear what happened between the two.

Now there is a much bigger issue. Without a director, the film cannot move forward with production. Which means that Bond 25 could miss its release date. More on the story below.

The report comes to us from Variety who says MGM and Eon, the film’s backers, are currently looking for a writer-director or a writer to pen a script. However, despite their search, the fact that they are not looking for a director means a major script overhaul is in order. Not a good sign for those who have been waiting for a sequel.

Boyle and his co-writer, John Hodge, had turned in a draft. However, the question was if it was up to producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli‘s standards. So based on who they are looking at, it seems they are giving a script more of a priority than finding someone who will direct it. This could mean, which was the feeling many had to begin with, that the script from Boyle and Hodge could be scrapped. Additionally, Broccoli and Wilson may not be interested in a draft from scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, have written six Bond films including all four Daniel Craig has starred in.

The project was expected to begin filming on December 8 with some of the shooting expected to take place at Pinewood Studios in the UK. The franchise is also known to shoot in exotic locations, which only adds to the complexity of the logistics. In addition to that, the pre-production process can take months. This means that the locations and settings have already been scouted and locked in place. Writing a script from scratch does away with all of the pre-production work. So putting in a new script would only mean that they would have to start all over again.

And getting that done before a December 8 start date is not going to be easy.

Variety adds that although producers are willing to push the start date to January of next year for a winter release, it is quite possible that they could release the next Bond film in Summer 2020 or just wait an entire year and release it for a traditional winter date.

The report does not mention anything about a shortlist of directors to replace Boyle. Which is a very telling sign. The fact that they are probably not going to use Purvis and Wade’s script is also very telling. And with some of the directors of the early shortlist already moving on to other projects, it seems like Bond 25 will be pushed back to a later date. Although, some are saying Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie would be a fine replacement, it may be too much of a parallel for him. But that is just my opinion.

Of course, we will keep you up to date on the development of Bond 25. Until then, it is all just wait and see.
