Anthony Russo and Joe Russo have brought audiences three incredible Marvel Studios films. And there is no doubt that Avengers 4 will be just as good if not better than Avengers: Infinity War. That being said, the sibling directors already have other projects lined up for when they are done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to new reports the two will be directing Cherry, based on a book from first-time novelist Nico Walker which revolves around an Army medic with undiagnosed PTSD who starts to rob banks to cope. More on the story below.
Deadline was the first to report on the news. And here’s a short synopsis:
The book has been called Jesus’ Son meets Reservoir Dogs, a breakneck-paced debut novel about love, war, bank robberies, and heroin. A young man from an affluent family marries his hometown girlfriend before joining the Army and shipping out to Iraq. An Army medic, he is unprepared for the grisly reality that awaits him, and the rough-and-tumble nature of his fellow soldiers who smoke, huff computer duster, take painkillers, watch porn, and get gruesomely injured all too regularly.
By the time the soldier returns home, his PTSD rages, he’s soon on drugs and in debt, and he finds an outlet in knocking off banks, a pursuit that forces him to focus and makes him feel the way he did in pressure combat situations. Walker robbed about a dozen banks and stole close to $40,000 over four months, before finally getting caught in 2011.
Apparently, this is one of the hottest projects on the market. James Franco was attached to direct with Stronger‘s John Pollono tasked with writing the script that was pitched to Warner Bros., who had a larger bid than AGBO. Sony was also in the mix, taking the bid up higher than $1 million. However, Sony had no creative talent attached.
But despite some of the big name studios, AGBO won the rights to tell this story. One of the things that probably got the deal to happen was the fact that Walker and the Russos both come from Cleveland, Ohio. The subject matter may have also been a deciding factor as they too lost someone close to them to opioids, which made them more interested in shining a light on the problem.
