Matt Smith Doctor Who Christmas Special 2013 The Time Of The Doctor

The cast of Star Wars: Episode IX continues to grow more impressive with each and every new announcement.

Following the casting of LOST star Dominic Monaghan comes reports that Doctor Who star Matt Smith will be joining the highly anticipated sequel for a key role. More on the story below.

The news comes to us from Variety, who says Smith’s role will be key for the film. However, they would not delve into any specific details about it. We do know that Episode IX will be the final installment in the Skywalker saga. The franchise itself will live on through new stories in The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s trilogy, a film series from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and a TV series from Jon Favreau.

It will be interesting to see which side of the war Smith will be landing on. The war between the Resistance and the First Order will come to an epic conclusion, and Smith could be the deciding factor. He could be a leader for either faction or an outside force that could tip the balance in one’s favor.

Matt Smith is probably best known for his work on Doctor Who, where he played the time-traveling protagonist for three seasons before passing the baton to Peter Capaldi. The actor then moved on to working on Netflix’s The Crown, where he earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

He will join Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, and making his franchise return, Billy Dee Williams. Mark Hamill is said to return as a Force Ghost, while Carrie Fisher will also make a posthumous appearance with the help of unused The Force Awakens footage.

Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, and Naomi Ackie are among the other new faces to the franchise. And like Smith, their roles remain under wraps.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, who is using a script written by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice scribe Chris Terrio, Star Wars: Episode IX opens in theaters on December 20, 2019.
