In Captain Marvel Academy Award winner Brie Larson plays Carol Danvers. She leaves Earth to join an intergalactic force known as Starforce, but when she returns, she questions her past. Upon her return, she finds out that she must fight the shape-shifting Skrulls, led by their leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), whose goal is to invade Earth.

In addition to releasing the first look at Larson as Captain Marvel, EW also released a handful of new images which reveal our first look at Starforce, Jude Law, a two-eyed Nick Fury (don’t know if I will get used to that), and the Skrulls. Check out the photos below.

The first image sees Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in her traditional red, blue, and gold suit. Leaked images have shown the character in her green Starforce suit – which we will get to later. But more importantly, we learn that Danvers is part human and part Kree. Is that because she is like Star-Lord who has human and alien DNA, or will that be because the film will attempt to mirror her comic book origins? I suppose we will find out sooner or later.

But directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck describe Starforce as the SEAL Team Six of space. While Carol is a prominent member, there may be another face you will recognize. That’s right, Korath (Djimon Hounsou, returning from Guardians of the Galaxy) is a member. Maybe we will see what happened that made him stray from the path of good. Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan) is also a member.

While Jude Law‘s character’s name has yet to be revealed, he plays the commander of Starforce, who views Carol as a mentee and pet project:

“These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control. That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.”

It had been rumored that he will be playing Captain Mar-Vell, a character in the comics who disguised himself as a human in order to see if the Earth was a threat to the Kree in their war against the Skrulls.

Speaking of the Skrulls, we are also getting our first look at the shape-shifting alien race, who are being led by Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). Talos is a Skrull of many talents as not only is he able to shape-shift, he has successfully infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. – for a secret government organization, they are pretty lousy with background checks and leaks. In one of the images, we get to see Mendelsohn in his human form and in another his true Skrull form. “It’s not easy being green,” Mendelsohn quips.

While our first introduction to Ronan revealed that he was a Kree fanatic bent on destroying Xandar in Guardians of the Galaxy, we are learning that he’s a high-ranking member of Kree society in Captain Marvel. Maybe we will find out how he became an outcast. Lee Pace returns to reprise the role.

Captain Marvel‘s biggest reveal came when it was announced that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) would be returning. He was the one who sent out the distress signal on his beeper before he turned into dust in Avengers: Infinity War. Since the film takes place in the ’90s, he would not have met Iron Man, Captain America, or any of the other members of the Avengers. What’s even more shocking, we will see him with two eyes.

Finally, Captain Marvel introduces Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau. The character is a single mother and one of Carol’s oldest friends. Although, if you look closely, you will see her “Photon” on the side of her jet. Marvel Comics fans may see that as a hint that Rambeau could either become Captain Marvel who then moves on to the name Photon or just move straight onto Photon. Or it could be a small nod to the fans.

Boden and Fleck (Mississippi Grind, Half Nelson) helm the film using a script written by themselves and a group of female writers that consist of Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, First Man), Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider, Sherlock Holmes 3), and Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch (Glow).

Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 9, 2018. You can find out more about the film and the full gallery of photos over at EW.
