IT: Chapter 2 Writer Gary Dauberman Talks Visualizing The Ritual Of Chud

The malevolent sewer-scuttling clown known as Pennywise will be back next year to haunt a much older Losers Club in Derry, Maine. Andy Muschietti returns to direct the highly anticipated horror sequel, IT: Chapter 2, which will reinforce the idea that clowns are f****** scary. In it we see all the members of the Losers, who are now all grown up, return to their hometown to face off against Pennywise one last time. But it’s not so much the battle that we should be concerned with as it is the ritual that will be in the film.

Now we are getting a little hint of what to expect and how the collaboration between Muschietti and writer Gary Dauberman is helping shape the script. More on the story below. Spoilers will follow, so if you don’t what to know anything about it, then I suggest you stop right now.

CinemaBlend exclusively spoke to Dauberman who talked about The Ritual of Chüd, which is an important part of the story that is vague and hard to describe, but has more than enough to keep the reader engaged. Just try to imagine a time-traveling battle between the Losers Club and IT. In fact, Dauberman addressed some of the challenges of envisioning that. Here’s what he had to say:

“The Ritual of Chüd is challenging, but it’s such an important component to the book that we had to address it. That stuff is difficult to balance, but because [director Andy Muschietti, producer Barbara Muschietti and I] worked with each other before, when I’m writing pages and all that stuff it becomes more of a conversation and less like, ‘Hey, here’s what I did.’ It’s sort of organic; it’s really kind of just chipping away at the stone and trying to find the most focused, accessible way into some of more metaphysical aspects of that book.”

So that’s a little insight on how the writer, director, and producer work together in order to make sure they are getting everything right. Dauberman went on about his collaboration with Muschietti:

“I think that’s something that Andy gave a lot of thought about, which was great, because as I was kind of chugging along through the Adrian Melon stuff and sort of more the stuff that’s in the book that you kind of just want to see on screen. I’m writing that stuff, and Andy would kind of go off and think about Chüd and how he wants to visually represent all that stuff. He just came up with some brilliant, brilliant stuff”¦ It really is going to be amazing.”

As for the ritual itself, it is actually a battle of wills that takes place in an area beyond space and time. It’s hard to describe, but part of the ritual includes sticking out tongues, a joke-off, time travel, and strange orange lights called Deadlights. We saw a hint of this from Muschietti’s film when Pennywise was putting Beverly under his floating spell. But these lights are also a doorway to another dimension.

This dimension has, of all things, a turtle, who is one of two things that live in it. IT is the other living being. However, the Turtle is the force for good whereas IT is a force of evil. So the two have been engaged in a constant battle of good and evil. And the only way to win this battle is if one gives in. For Bill he loses if he gives in to IT’s fear and IT loses if he gives in by laughing. It’s all very weird.

But while that inter-dimensional battle is going on, IT has to also contend with the people in the physical world. Like I said, weird.

So yeah, it is going to be a bit difficult to bring all of that to life on the big screen. And it is safe to say that the ritual is going to be a very important piece of the film. So here’s hoping they get it right.

IT: Chapter 2 opens in theaters on September 6, 2019.
