Red Sonja #100 review

Bryan Singer is no stranger to scandals and poor on-set behavior, and yet, the guy still keeps getting offers to direct films. Singer was recently fired from Bohemian Rhapsody after reports of him walking off set started to surface. And despite his reported unprofessionalism, it looks like he is getting another chance to direct a film. New reports say that Singer has signed on to helm a big-screen adaptation of Red Sonja for Millennium. More on the story below.

THR says Millennium Films will be financing and producing the new version of Red Sonja and hopes that it could be a franchise that mirrors the success of DC’s Wonder Woman. Millennium’s Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta are producing alongside Cinelou’s Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon.

In fact, Millennium is paying Singer (X-Men, Superman Returns) top dollar for the assignment, which is seen as a step toward rehabilitating the director’s image. Apparently, being fired mid-production for walking away from set, being hit with sexual assault lawsuits, and getting into altercations with cast members wasn’t enough of a red flag for Millennium. In fact, the studio is willing to give Singer a chance as “none of the allegations seem to have merit,” an insider source told THR.

This seems to be very disappointing considering that another opportunity for a female director to helm the film has been taken away from them. That being said, X-Men: First Class screenwriter Ashley Miller will pen the screenplay. Singer is set to receive full directing credit.

Millennium has been working on releasing a Red Sonja film for over a decade. In that time, the project has seen numerous actresses sign on for the lead role only to leave due to the fact that the adaptation has been in development hell. But signing on a director is a step in the right direction. At one point, Robert Rodriguez was to direct with Rose McGowan playing the title role. Amber Heard, who went on to the DCEU, was even considered to play Red Sonja. However, plans for that fell through as well. And now we are here.

For those who are unfamiliar with the character, Red Sonja is a sword-and-sorcery comic-book heroine created for Marvel Comics in 1973 by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Smith (which was based on a Robert E. Howard character). She is known for he mastery of swords and is in peak human physical condition. She is also a martial arts expert, and has knowledge and experience of fighting the supernatural. The character previously had a self-titled big-screen adaptation in 1985 with Brigitte Nielsen as the lead and co-starring Arnold Schwarzenegger fresh of the Conan movies.

No word yet on who Millennium may be considering to play the title role. But we will keep you up to date should any news on that come in.
