Warner Bros. and MGM have dropped the second trailer for Creed II. From director Steven Caple Jr. the film sees the return of Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo Creed, who has gone from a son trying to escape his father’s shadow to a champion fighter creating his own legacy.
However, the sequel will see his past catch up to him, as the son of Ivan Drago issues a challenge to Adonis. With his coach Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and Bianca (Tessa Thompson) by his side, Adonis will have to find out what is worth fighting for. Check out the full trailer and a pair of new posters below.
Once again, the film knows its roots. Using that familiar theme from the first Rocky films but also remembering that Creed II has its own story to tell. A sequel like this seemed inevitable considering that Ivan killed Adonis’s father. So it will be another clash of titans. How the fight will end remains to be seen.
But the trailer tells us that there is a lot more at stake than a simple fight. Adonis has a family. And committing to a fight like this could mirror the match between his father and Ivan. Which is why we see Rocky asking Adonis to decline the challenge.
Of course, that doesn’t happen. And what we see is that Adonis will come to know what he truly is fighting for as clips of his family and dedication to training are shown.
Dolph Lundgren returns to reprise his role as Ivan Dragon, who is acting as the coach for his son, Viktor Drago (Florian “The Big Nasty” Munteanu).
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.
It will be interesting to see how fans of the original will react to the entire film. Ryan Coogler did not return to direct the sequel. That responsibility was left to Caple Jr. But the sequel looks great, despite its somewhat predictable match.
Phylicia Rashad, Wood Harris, and Andre Ward also star.
Creed II opens in theaters on November 21, 2018. Check out the first trailer for the film if you missed it.
