Fox Shifts Release Dates For ‘Alita: Battle Angel,’ ‘Dark Phoenix’ and More

Another day, another handful of films getting rescheduled. This time, 20th Century Fox is making a handful of moves and a few surprising announcements. In addition to moving Atila: Battle Angel and Dark Phoenix back a few months, the studio has also announced that they would be releasing a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2. More on the story below.

Per Deadline, Alita: Battle Angel will be moving from its December 21, 2018 release date all the way to February 14, 2019. If that date sounds familiar, it should, as it was once occupied by Dark Phoneix. Robert Rodriguez‘s adaptation of the manga, that was supposed to be directed by James Cameron, has had its share of schedule shifts. Now, a February release doesn’t necessarily mean that Fox is dumping it in a dead slot. The first Deadpool found huge success at that date. So did Marvel Studio’s Black Panther. But those were all superhero films. Alita, while relatively successful, isn’t so much of a household name as Black Panther and may not be as attractive as a raunchy superhero film, so it remains to be seen if it can be successful.

As for Dark Phoenix, that is moving up as well. Now instead of its February 12, 2019 release, it will hit theaters on June 7, 2019. Again, this X-Men film has seen many delays and schedule changes. But it is moving to a summer date, so Fox believes that they have a winner on their hands, despite the fact that the first trailer had a lukewarm reception.

Now for the softer more tone-downed Deadpool 2, that will open on December 21, 2018. Of course, releasing a less violent, less raunchy, less sexual Deadpool 2 would take away from who the character is. That said, Fox would be making available to the family, which is perfect considering that families would be out on holiday. While a family-friendly cut is to be expected, Deadpool 2 star Ryan Reynolds tweeted an interesting photo that suggests the PG-13 cut could contain new material. It’s an image that shows him as Deadpool wearing a Santa hat reading to an old Fred Savage who is in bed, a clear reference to The Princess Bride but with a Deadpool spin. But who knows if this is what Fox is really going for?

Meanwhile, Gambit, a film that has spent a better part of its life in development hell, will now hit theaters on March 13, 2020. According to producer Simon Kinberg, the film will have a romantic comedy vibe to it, adding that the script is great and that they could start shooting as early as next year. But they still need to find a director.
