‘Gambit’ Will Be A Superhero Film With A Romantic Comedy Vibe
  |  @   |

Superhero movies are exploring a variety of genres these days. Captain America is a political thriller. Logan is a western. And the DCEU films have yet to be established. And one genre that’s rarely explored is the superhero realm is the romantic comedy. But that could all change with, of all films, Gambit. More on the story below.

In an interview with IGN, long-time X-Men producer and Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg dropped a few details on the long-gestating Gambit film. The Ragin’ Cajun’s solo film has been in development hell for the better part of the last five years and is still without a director. However, Kinberg did comment on the genre, and confirmed that the film will have a romantic-comedy tinge to it. He also confirmed some other genres for other upcoming X-Men films.

“When you look at Gambit, he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy.”

“Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film.”

“You know, when I say a romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely. It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”

So there will be romantic comedy vibe to it, which is pretty much what we can expect from all superhero films with a genre slant. And it seems fitting that Gambit is the character for this genre considering that he is a womanizer. But it does seem like a little pigeonholing. Then I can’t imagine the character being in any other genre considering that he doesn’t have that much of an interesting backstory when compared to some of the more notable members of the X-Men.

That being said it will be interesting to see how all of this transpires. Kinberg says that they have “a great script” and could start shooting as early as next year. But before any of that could happen, they are going to need to find a cast and a director. The standalone film has gone through a revolving door of directors in recent years, with names like Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski passing through.

Most importantly, they will need to find a female lead opposite Channing Tatum, who has the title role. So if all goes according to plan, we could see the film as early as 2020. That’s if things goes according to plan. Until then we will just have to wait and see.
