Zack Snyder Would Have Killed Batman In The ‘Justice League’ Sequel
  |  @   |

The original plan for Justice League was to release it in two parts. However, plans for that fell through, and Zack Snyder ended up directing it, with the help of Joss Whedon, as one film.

It’s unclear what a two-part Justice League would have looked like, but we are getting a better picture of what would have happened to some of the characters. Snyder took to social media to reveal that he would have killed Batman (Ben Affleck) in the Justice League sequel. More on the story below.

Snyder took to Vero to respond to a fan’s question about how a “five-part” Justice League story arc would have had the death of Batman:

Batman-News confirmed the five-part story arc when storyboard artist Jay Olivia revealed that Man of Steel was “never meant to have a sequel.”

It’s not clear how the death of Batman would have had an impact of the DCEU as a whole, but it would mirror the character’s demise in the comics. Though the Dark Knight has died multiple times before, his most significant death came in at Final Crisis, where he was captured by Darkseid and had his DNA used to create multiple Batman clones. While he had to break his one rule not to wield firearms to mortally wound Darkseid, the overlord of Apokolips was able to “kill” Batman with his omega beams. However, it was later revealed that Batman was sent to the past, where he was a time bomb waiting to explode in a prehistoric Gotham City. But that is for a later time.

At this point, I’m just interested to see if a DCEU can sustain itself without its two flagship characters. Ben Affleck clearly doesn’t want to play Batman, and Henry Cavill will no longer play Superman after a falling out with his character’s cameo in Shazam! However, Gal Gadot remains committed to playing Wonder Woman, and it seems like Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller will play Aquaman and the Flash, respectively, for the very foreseeable future.

And then there are a number of other films that WB is turning their attention to like Supergirl and Batgirl, with two female superheroes who share a similar moniker to their male counterparts. Then there is also the Nightwing film that is currently under development. So there are plenty of other DC heroes to build a new Justice League around while also waiting for the right time to reboot Superman and Batman.

Still, it would have been interesting to see what Snyder’s five-part Justice League would have looked like had it been released. Sure killing off major characters is a bold decision, but if done in the right way, it would only increase the excitement and build up more hype. It’s worked for other studios.

It remains to be seen how Matt Reeves will deal with the character in the next planned solo film, The Batman. Will Affleck get the proper sendoff he wants or will it be a new start to for the character? We will just have to wait and see.
