There is a lot of buzz going around regarding the Amazon Prime Video original series, Good Omens, based on the Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. Pfeff-Bot (me!) of Geeks of Doom had the opportunity to interview the cast and creators of Good Omens following the electrifying New York Comic-Con panel and trailer release on Saturday afternoon, October 6th.

Creator and showrunner Neil Gaiman and director Douglas Mackinnon joined stars Michael Sheen (Aziraphale), David Tennant (Crowley), Jon Hamm (Archangel Gabriel), and Miranda Richardson (Madame Tracy) for the round-table interview.

Amazon describes the highly-anticipated series as “a dark, comedic story set in modern day Britain that centers on the stoic and sensible angel, Aziraphale (played by Sheen) and the suave man-about-town demon, Crowley (played by Tennant) as they join forces to prevent the coming of the Apocalypse.”

Good Omens will premiere in 2019 on Amazon Prime Video in over 200 countries and territories.

David Tennant & Michael Sheen Interview:

Sarah Pfeffer, Geeks of Doom: How long have you two known each other?
Tennant: 2003?
Sheen: Something like that.
Tennant: Let’s say that.
Sheen: But we weren’t in scenes together [in Stephen Fry‘s Bright Young Things], so we were just sort of in the same film. We’ve just sort of known each other so this is the first time we’ve actually gotten to work together. And this is, like, into the deep end”¦
Tennant: Certainly is! [laughs]
Sheen: Just the two of us all the time.

Sarah Pfeffer, Geeks of Doom: Are there any characters you’ve played in the past that you see some similarities with [your Good Omens character] or do you feel like this is something totally new for you?
Tennant: Ooh, I don’t know; that’s a good question. I feel like I needed three days notice to give you a decent answer.
Sheen: I played the character in a very little film – small independent film – when I was just starting to do films called Heartlands and that character was a real innocent. And it’s a sort of road movie about a young guy who has never left his village and he goes off on a little moped across Britain to try and get his wife back”¦
Tennant: You were great in that film; I remember that!
Sheen: Oh, thank you. But there’s something kind of…the innocence of that is sort of the closest to Aziraphale. But then, Aziraphale is not just innocent so there’s that in there, and he’s very vulnerable and everything is really on the surface with him. But I’ve not really played a character like Aziraphale before.
Pfeffer: That’s exciting.
Tennant: You know, the only character I think of a bit is Peter Vincent in the movie Fright Night, who’s a bit…I mean, they dress quite similarly. He’s a bit rock’n’roll; he thinks he’s really cool and he’s actually not cool at all and he’s rather soft and rather sweet under a very swaggery exterior so there are elements of that to Crowley.
Sheen: Well, there’s a little bit of Aziraphale in the character I played in Bright Young Things. A tiny little bit”¦
Tennant: Yes, but, again they’re characters that feel eternal. They feel like archetypes and again, that comes back to what Neil and Terry created because they feel like they’ve been around forever.
Sheen: I do find it difficult to describe Aziraphale without describing the relationship. There sort of is no Aziraphale without Crowley; I do feel like that.

Jon Hamm & Miranda Richardson Interview

Sarah Pfeffer, Geeks of Doom: What do you find to be the most fun part of your character?
Hamm: Playing kind of a…just an idiot is fun for me. A person whose confidence is so misplaced, and yet they don’t care…That part of it was really fun, and also it was cool to be able to play a thing that kind of wasn’t from the book, really. He’s mentioned in the book, but you never see him or have a scene with him. And then to have Neil there and kind of shepherd him along, and if there are any questions, you’re like: “Is this even remotely what you want?”
Richardson: You can always ask a question.
Hamm: I mean, he knows the book like the back of his hand, because he wrote it with the back of his hand…the front of his hand.

Neil Gaiman & Douglas Mackinnon Interview

Sarah Pfeffer, Geeks of Doom: Did it [Good Omens script to screen] turn out exactly as you envisioned it, or has it changed?
Gaiman: No, it has its own life. It completely became its own entity…
Mackinnon: At some point, it started making itself. It starts taking over. It’s a bit like David and Michael…but they sort of talk about how a third figure appeared between the two of them because they just started playing in the show and we felt that all along. So, we’ve got amazing people like David Arnold doing music, we’ve got Peter Anderson doing our front titles, plus all the graphics, and it just feels like a family just coming together and saying, “Oh, this is the best thing that I ever want to be part of…I had this thing where, if we lost someone, we would from plan A to plan AA, so we’d just go up instead of down.
Gaiman: We’d try for somebody better. There was a point where, one of our cast, who was going to be great, had a family tragedy and we lost him [from the show], and it was right at the end of shooting which meant we had no money left to pay anybody because our casting budget had all run out and I thought, “Well, who do I want to play the U.S. Ambassador?” and I sent a text to Nick Offerman and said, “Would you like to come to South Africa and be in Good Omens? PS: We can barely pay you. And he said, “I will buy my plane ticket; when do I need to be there?”
