‘Fast and Furious’ Producer Neal Moritz Files Lawsuit Over ‘Hobbs and Shaw’
  |  @   |

The Fast and Furious franchise may have its longevity but it’s not without its share of problems. The film has had behind the scenes issues with its cast ranging from a feud between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson to a feud between Johnson and Tyrese. There is even a concern about how the female members of the cast don’t have enough of a role in the films.

However, the latest troubles don’t involve any of the actors. It involves a lawsuit about Hobbs and Shaw, the first Fast and Furious spinoff, and is between Fast and Furious producer Neal Moritz and Universal. According to the latest report, Moritz claims that Universal has breached an oral agreement they had made. More on the report below.

Deadline, who was the first to report on the news, says Moritz wants to be “reinstated” as lead producer on Hobbs and Shaw or be paid tens of millions dollars in damages in lost compensation.

Here’s the basic gist of what the 20-page filing says:

“In an extraordinary show of bad faith, and just a few days before filming was set to begin on Hobbs and Shaw, Universal took the position that Moritz either had to amend his oral producer deal to accept substantially inferior financial terms, or be cut out of the Picture altogether.”

“Remarkably, despite Moritz having complete Pay-or-Play protection on all of his last several deals on the FF Franchise and having relied on Universal’s oral promises, Universal also took the extraordinary position that it was free to exploit Moritz’s ideas for Hobbs and Shaw, and his work product over an approximately year-and-a-half period, without honoring its oral producer agreement”

So Universal made Moritz another offer, one that he clearly refused to take. As a result, the studio kicked him off of the film. It is hard to pick a side on this one, however, as a general rule of thumb, it’s best to get things in ink rather than just hope people honor an oral agreement.

As aforementioned, the Fast and Furious films is no stranger to feuds, controversies, and other behind-the-scenes issues. However, they’ve managed to overcome them. Still, this is one of the more problematic issues the franchise is facing. It’s not exactly clear how this will have an effect on Hobbs and Shaw or any of the other planned sequels/spinoffs. But we will keep you up to date on any developments should they come in.

Hobbs and Shaw is scheduled to open in theaters on August 11, 2019.
