John Carpenter‘s Halloween is one of the greatest horror films ever made, and turned the filmmaker from an up and coming director to a horror legend. If Psycho is the mother of all horror movies, then Halloween may be its spiritual son.
Forty years after its 1978 theatrical release, Halloween spawned not only sequels and remakes, but an entire sub-genre: the slasher film. This Friday, October 19th the 11th movie to enter the long-running franchise opens worldwide. This new film, also called Halloween, was directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) and written by Green, Danny McBride, and Jeff Fradley and is a direct sequel to Carpenter’s seminal classic. With that in mind, it’s a perfect time to revisit the original in the best way possible, with the new 4K Ultra Blu-ay Combo Pack.
See Halloween like never before in ultra high definition with pristine picture. If you thought Michael Myers’s pale mask silhouetting in the darkness was scary before, you have not seen anything yet. The two-disc combo pack is full of special features, including three different featurettes:
– The Night She Came Home
– On Location: 25 Years Later
– Halloween: A Cut Above The Rest
There is also an audio commentary track with Carpenter, the late Debra Hill who co-wrote and produced the film, and star Jamie Lee Curtis, as well as TV and radio spots and trailers. My favorite feature, especially for a film I’ve seen probably 50+ times, was the “fun fact” version, which plays along with the film a la VH1’s “Pop-Up Video.”
Look, by now we all own a version of Halloween. This will be my third platform with Halloween after VHS and DVD and this is far and away the best. The film that started it all, Halloween, in a beautiful 4K Ultra HD/Blu Ray combo pack is available now in stores and online at Amazon. Relive the inaugural horror classic before seeing its direct sequel, once again starring Curtis, in theaters on this Friday.
You can read my review for the new Halloween film here.
On a black and unholy Halloween night years ago, little Michael Myers brutally slaughtered his sister in cold blood. But for the last fifteen years, town residents have rested easy, knowing that he was safely locked away in a mental hospital “” until tonight. Tonight, Michael returns to the same quiet neighborhood to relive his grisly murder again…and again…and again. For this is a night of evil. Tonight is Halloween!
