One of the best indie horror films of 2018 is Jenn Wexler‘s The Ranger. Written by Wexler and Giaco Furino, the film feels like the love child of The Return of the Living Dead and Wolf Creek. Since premiering at SXSW in March, the film has been touring the national and international festival circuit and had short theater runs in both New York and Los Angeles. It was reported this week by Variety that the film was picked up by AMC’s horror streaming service Shudder and will debut on the network next year.
After they’re involved in some trouble at a nightclub, a group of punks in a Scooby-Doo-style van escape to a cabin in the middle of a national park, where they are stalked by a maniacal park ranger played by the imposing Jeremy Holm (House of Cards). The cabin belongs to Chelsea (Chloe Levine) who has history with the titular villain. The Ranger also stars Granit Lahu, Jeremy Pope, Amanda Grace Benitez, Bubba Weiler, and features a cameo from producer Larry Fessenden.
Shudder premiered a few years ago and has quickly become the “it” service for horror aficionados thanks to an incredible selection and its “Curator’s” section in which fans and industry professionals pick lists for Shudder subscribers. You can get a free one week trial of Shudder and then it’s only $4.99 a month. You can read my review of The Rangerhere and check out my interview with writer/director Jenn Wexler here.
