Remember Hell Fest, the all too scary take on amusement park Halloween mazes? Well, there seems to be a recurring theme here. Now they are targeting the escape room. For those who are not familiar with the concept, escape rooms are when a group of people get together to solve puzzles and answer riddles in order to escape their current imprisonment. Of course, this is the perfect conceit for a horror film.
And this gives us Escape Room, a film that takes the concept of the friendly game and turns it into a horrific nightmare. Sony Pictures has released an official trailer for the film, and you can check it out below along with a poster.
The idea of it all is that six strangers are brought together to play a new escape room with the chance to win $1 million dollars. Unfortunately, these six players come to find out there were all brought there for a purpose. And if they don’t figure out how to get out, they will all die.
Sure, it may not be entirely original, but a horror riff on escape rooms does have its potential. Of course, one can’t help but see the similarities to Saw, in which unwitting players are forced to play a game of survival.
Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine, Nik Dodani, and Yorick van Wageningen are the players. All of them coming from all different walks of life, but are drawn together with the opportunity to win $1 million dollars. However, they don’t know they are all linked together.
The film is directed by Adam Robitel (Insidious: The Last Key).
And here is the official plot synopsis:
Escape Room is a psychological thriller about six strangers who find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and must use their wits to find the clues or die.
