‘Friday The 13th’ Reboot In The Works From LeBron James

Halloween made a killing over its opening weekend, grossing over $76 million. Its success has now opened the doors for other iconic horror franchises to be given the reboot treatment. According to new reports, a Friday the 13th reboot is in the works, and LeBron James‘ SpringHill Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment are in talks to bring Jason back.
But it’s not just because of Halloween‘s success that another horror franchise reboot is in the works. There’s more to it than that. More on the report below.
The news of James being in talks to produce a new take on Friday the 13th was first reported by Bloody Disgusting.
While Halloween‘s massive box office success is one of the contributing factors to this announcement, another is from a legal standpoint. Original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller regained the rights to his screenplay, character, and locations in a lengthy legal battle against Horror, Inc. However, the latter is currently appealing. Other aspects of this legal matter include control over domestic and international markets. It seems that Miller would control the rights here in the US, while Warner Bros. and New Line, who produced and distributed the 2009 remake, would handle overseas markets.
Voorhees is considered to be an icon of the horror genre. The young boy who drowned in Crystal Lake makes a miraculous resurrection with the intent to murder everyone in his path. But it turns out that the unstoppable Jason was actually Pamela Voorhees. However, after she was subsequently killed, it was revealed that Jason was watching nearby, and he began a bloody crusade of revenge.
LeBron James is a fan of the franchise, as he declared in this tweet from 2010:
Friday the 13th! Jason Vorhees is one of my favorites. Still don't understand how he caught people running and he just walked though.
He does have a point. But then again, that was all part of the fun.
This would not be the first time that James has made his foray into Hollywood. After starring in Trainwreck, the Lakers star made a series of moves in Hollywood by launching his SpringHill Entertainment group. He is also currently working on a new Space Jam film.
Now it’s unclear when we will be able to see the new Friday the 13th or what kind of approach it will take in terms of story. For one thing, it could be rebooted entirely and tell a new story. On the other hand, it could be a rebooted sequel and take place after the first and ignore any subsequent sequels. We will just have to wait and see.
