Mary Poppins Returns Starring Emily Blunt

You’d be hard-pressed not to smile at anything from Mary Poppins Returns, including this new special look video Disney has released. Every new look continues to exude a sense of joy and delight. Though it has been decades since the first film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke hit theaters, the sequel looks like it will carry on its legacy.

This time, Emily Blunt stars in the title role and will care for the Banks family once more when their family has run into a bit of trouble again. Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Meryl Streep, Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson also star. And you know how much fun that will be when he’s inserted into something like this. Check out the special look below.

Now, the video only runs a minute long, but it does gives us a look at how much the technology has changed since way back when. Yes, there will be animated and live-action hybrid musical sequences. But there also appears to be a bit of CG. That is, unless they really put a dolphin in a bathtub. Joking aside, director Rob Marshall looks like he has stayed true to the spirit of the character whose unconventional nannying has helped the Banks family time and time again.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Set in 1930s London, which is the time period of the original novels by P.L. Travers. The story follows Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer), who are now grown up. Michael is living with his three children (Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson) and housekeeper Ellen (Julie Walters), in the house on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael has a personal loss, Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) comes back into the lives of the Banks family. She is joined by a street lamplighter named Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), and an eccentric cousin named Topsy (Meryl Streep).

It will be interesting to see how fans of the original and those who were around to see it when it was released will react to the new film. But based on everything we have seen so far, the sequel continues to put a smile on our faces. Maybe even make us shed a few tears. Whatever the case may be, it looks like Mary Poppins Returns will please audiences old and new. And hopefully get some interested in seeing the original if they haven’t already.

Mary Poppins Returns opens December 19, 2018.
